IBM's Personal Computer XT (PC/XT) range developed many of the PC standards, such as the ISA bus and Intel architecture. The range replaced the original IBM PC, consisting of:
- 5160 (1983) - Utilising the same 8088 CPU at 4.77MHz that powered the IBM PC, but with up to 256K RAM and 8 ISA slots
- 5155 (1984) - Named the Portable PC, but based on the 5160
- 5162 (1985) - Similar to the PC/XT, but featuring an 80286 CPU
The machines were well built using a relatively heavy grade of steel and were extremely reliable, typically operating well beyond their '5 year' design life. The PC/XT range was discontinued in 1986, being replaced by the faster PC/AT range.
