Amstrad is a British electronics company, founded in 1968 by Alan Sugar (the name is a contraction of Alan Michael Sugar Trading). Amstrad was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1980, and gained a substantial share of the UK PC market in the 1980s.

In its prime, Amstrad produced some very successful products such as the PCW8256 wordprocessor and the PC1512 IBM compatibe PC. Their reputation was however damaged by some poor quality and already dated-when-launched products (such as the GX4000), and despite the purchase of competing manufacturers such as Viglen in the 1990s, they eventually exited the PC market in 1997, instead focusing on the successful range of Sky boxes.
